So what exactly am I talking about when I refer to free & open source creative tools? What tools are available? Here's a short survey:

• Inkscape - Vector graphics tool; similar to Illustrator
• GIMP - bitmap graphics tool; similar to Photoshop
• Agave - color palette creation tool
• Krita - Painter-like graphics creation tool
• Scribus - page layout tool, similar to PageMaker or Quark XPress
• ImageMagick - image batch processing tool
• Fyre - mathematical artwork creation tool (bitmap)
• Synfig - vector animation
• Karbon - koffice vector drawing tool
• Skencil - another foss vector graphics tool
• sk1 - another foss vector graphics tool
• Xara Xtreme - another open source vector graphics editor
• Cinepaint
